Back in 2002, the Russian military was fighting against radical Chechen militants as well as militants there. Then, on August 19, 2002, the Chechen militants shot down a Mil Mi-26 carrying over 140 soldiers between military bases. The rebels used a simple man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) to shoot down the helicopter. The chopper ended up crashing into a minefield, with those who survived the disaster then having to contend with not stepping on any of the mines.
