In the 1970s, NBC was the least successful network out of ABC and CBS. There were 30 network shows between 1977 and 1978 and only four of them were on NBC.

When Diff’rent Strokes premiered on the network in 1978, and became a bigger success than the network ever thought, they wisely decided to capitalize on the success of the show and quickly create the show’s spinoff, The Facts of Life. Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett), was on both shows simultaneously for a while in order to make the storyline believable.
