Joaquin Phoenix has just won the Oscar for Best Actor for his magnificent, haunting work on Joker. Back in 2009, however, he was in a very different place. We now know his bizarre appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman was part of his not-that-great mockumentary I’m Still Here.

A bearded, sunglasses-wearing Phoenix wandered out and chewed gum throughout the interview, in which he refused to really answer any questions. Letterman, who seemingly wasn’t in on the gag, was noticeably getting madder. At the end, he simply said, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight” to the audience’s thunderous laughter and applause.
