When the archeologists stumbled upon the items, they were still partially buried beneath the ground. Because of this, they knew that they would have to get down to the statue’s level and get a better look.
They also knew that they would have to lift it out from the ground, and they ultimately used a digger to do this. This use of modern machinery caused outrage with the locals and other experts, but those in charge noted that there was no other way. The head of the statue was extremely heavy, and no other machinery would suffice.
