The success of Cyrus’ album was in some part down to the success of his love life. Since 1986, Billy Ray had been married to Cindy Smith, with whom he co-wrote several songs on the album, including the title track.
Unfortunately, Cyrus and Smith’s relationship did not last, and they divorced just a year before the release of his debut album. It seems that the struggle of trying to make it in the music business put a strain on their marriage that the two could not work past.
