The Man of Steel has gone through many different adaptations over the years, and one of them was the George Reeves version in the 50s Superman television show.

But there was one real life occurrence when Reeves showed up to an event in a Superman costume, and a young boy confronted him with a gun, asking if he was truly bulletproof. Reeves was quite shaken, and resolved to never wear his uniform in public again. He also began to advise against the portrayal of bulletproof characters, deeming it unsafe for their real-life counterparts.
