It is still unknown as to who exactly built the ancient underground city. However, many historians believe that it was built sometime in the 7th or 8th century by the Phygians. To this date, it is the biggest underground city ever discovered in Turkey. Derinkuyu was first mentioned in writing by the Greek philosopher and student of Socrates, Xenophon in around 430-354 B.C. In his writing, the builders of the city are never mentioned.
