The residents of Derinkuyu had to live underground for very long periods of time. The city had to not only act as a place to hide, but a place to live as well. Therefore, living areas, storage rooms, wine cellars, stores and churches were all set up to accommodate the residents. This allowed the people of Derinkuyu to live a pretty normal life, just as they would have above ground.
