Legendary actress Debbie Reynolds replaced Ann Wedgeworth as Dan’s mother Audrey in the ninth season of the show. She has struggled with mental illness all of her life and as a result has not been able to be a consistent presence in Dan’s life. She’s sweet albeit unstable and sometimes lashes out at Dan for the belief that he doesn’t understand her. Roseanne watches the distraught relationship and comforts Dan when his mother’s mental health issues become too much to bare.
