She eventually sought medical assistance, and was given the most devastating news of all: she had early-onset Alzheimer’s. Laura was her household’s chief breadwinner, and the burden – both financial and psychological – of her progressive disease became too much. To help, three of her college classmates set up a page for her on a “compassionate crowdfunding” site, which raised nearly $21,000 in under a year. Would Ebony be as fortunate?
