This person doesn’t want to spend a load of cash for a device that counts your steps and isn’t too fussed about size or convenience. We certainly wouldn’t want to wear that walking two steps… Let alone running a few miles.

However, it’s pretty impressive that they could create such a device out of what they had available. It seems as if it’s still wired into something too, hopefully, they don’t have a hamster powering that thing because that would be even harder to use.
