Wondering about who lived in the city is fun, but the question of who built it is also very intriguing. Upon further research, the officials figured that while the Derinkuyu society must have lived in this ancient underground, they may not have been the original architects of the city.
As the biggest underground structure ever discovered in Turkey, the theory is that it was possibly built in the 7th century by the ancient Phrygians. The Turkish man who discovered it still cannot believe it existed beneath his own house!
