The entertainer’s appearance was notable because it marked the first time that a black actor appeared on TV in an episode unrelated to race. His character wasn’t there to influence a storyline about the color of people’s skin; he was just another person like everyone else. You can’t deny “The Rifleman” was a progressive show.
