Viewers clearly didn’t have a problem with the way that Lewis directed the series, because it regularly performed well in the ratings. The show was so beloved that even Russia allowed it to air in their country. This was a considerable achievement given how strict their guidelines were regarding American programmes airing on TV. “The Rifleman” was one of the only shows of its time to make it to Russia, with Leonid Brezhnev apparently a huge fan. It’s good to have friends in high places.
