When a show gets canceled, it’s usually because of bad ratings. While other factors occasionally come into play, such as the behavior of the actors behind the scenes, a show can’t afford to stay on the air when it can’t maintain a viewership. However, the final nail in the coffin for “The Rifleman” wasn’t the ratings, but Johnny Crawford. The actor was growing up fast, so he could no longer effectively play a child. He was also ready to leave the show behind in search of something new and challenging.
