When Lucy was much older, she explained her mother’s reaction to the different skin tones in an interview: “It was such a shock for her because things like skin color don’t show up on scans before birth. So she had no idea that we were so different. When the midwife handed us both to her she was just speechless.” One can imagine the surprise a parent would have when they see that their child had an appearance that was completely unexpected.
