British tabloid The Sun ran a front page headline in 1992 that simply read “Squidgygate.” Besides the hat-tip to the American Watergate scandal, it referenced a secret (and illegal) recording of a conversation between Diana and her childhood friend, James Gilby, who constantly referred to Diana as “Squidgy” as a term of affection.
The talk covered a slew of various topics, from Diana’s fear of being pregnant again to her disdain for the Royal Family – and her husband. “He makes my life real torture,” she moaned, kicking off the “War of the Waleses” that would end in her divorce from Charles.
