When Harry Potter is first given the Marauder’s Map he uses it to find all the secret passageways in Hogwarts. An added bonus of the magical map is that it tells you the location of everyone in the castle.
You can’t hide your identity from it, so the fact that Peter Pettigrew was always with Ron should have dawned on someone eventually. Not only did his brother’s have the map, but his best friend did too and they should have figured out Scabbers the rat was an animagus sooner.
