Part of the shift towards more unusual names may be attributed to the fact that the people becoming parents in the greatest numbers these days are millennials. They were the first generation to be brought up on the message that standing out is better than fitting in.
They believe they’re special, and were told not to care about what others thought of them. It only stands to reason, then, that this attitude would be carried over into naming their children, and their cavalier approach to same.
