It all started with a sore throat. Martin had a relatively idyllic childhood in South Africa, living with his parents, and two siblings. According to his parents, Joan and Rodney Pistorius, Martin was an active child who was interested in electronics. He’d connect and build resistors and transistors for hours on end, his mother says, and was active in sports, at school, and in the house. At the age of 12, he fell ill with a seemingly simple laryngitis.
