But time travel stories are actually much older, with the first literary mention of time travel coming in the 3rd century CE, when historian Diogenes Laërtius recounted a tale about Epimenides, a sheepherder said to have fallen asleep in a cave in Crete, only to wake up 57 years later and discover almost everyone he knew was gone. Going back to his father’s farm, he found it owned by someone else, with people he didn’t know living in his family’s home. Finally, he met his younger brother, who was now an old man.
