Sitcoms are supposed to be lighthearted, but Modern Family has also made a name for itself for touching on subjects that are much more serious. While this is a great step forward for the world of comedy, the producers always make their way back to the happily-ever-after story at the end of each episode.
Even after a particularly difficult storyline, the characters will all have giant smiles on their faces, as though nothing ever happened. This takes away from the relatability of these stories, and many fans find it too much.
