Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was Spawn. Part of the wave of gritty anti-heroes in comic books in the 1990s, the movie version of Spawn is a Special Forces operative named Al Simmons who’s assassinated.
When he reaches the underworld, he makes a literal deal with the devil – go back to Earth in return for leading that demon’s armies in Armageddon. What we see here is precisely that demon, Malebolgia. As cool as it was seeing that nasty thing on the big screen 22 years ago, today it looks more like an angsty 13-year-old created it.
