They truly believed that they found the first piece of the puzzle that would lead them to the greatest treasure of their entire lives. The cannonball could serve as a treasure map and help them find the ship itself. They wanted so badly for the sphere to be what they believed it was. Their smiling faces prove that their two long year search was about to come to a fruitful end.
