In the book version, Forrest actually becomes an astronaut. Lieutenant Dan’s line in the film “If you’re ever a shrimp boat captain, that’s the day I’m an astronaut!” is meant to be an inside joke, since Forrest doesn’t fulfill the dream on-screen. Ironically enough, though, Gary Sinise and Tom Hanks went on to co-star in Apollo 13 one year later, in 1995.
