Have you ever found yourself bopping along to the latest tune? Perhaps there is a song that you just can’t get out of your head? Music can have a huge impact on our lives, and the lyrics can sometimes breathe a new life into our world. Sadly, we might have missed the boat along the way. It turns out there are some songs that don’t mean what you think.

Every Breath You Take – The Police

This might seem like a devoted love song, but it turns out that Every Breath You Take by The Police could be anything but. Yes, the song tells the tale of a lover who is so in love with their partner that they are willing to go to any lengths to control them. Lead singer of the band, Sting, was in the Caribbean when he put pen to paper and wrote the lyrics, yet admits that he has always been confused by home many people believe the song is a token of affection.

This is yet another love song that appears to have taken over the world. The difference? Total Eclipse of the Heart is a love song, but not as you would believe. In fact, the writer of the track, Jim Steinman, admits that it once had a different title. The song was supposed to be called Vampires in Love as it told the tale of two vampires battling to be with one another.

Wake Me Up When September Ends -Green Day

It wasn’t until the music video was released for this track that people thought they had uncovered the secret meaning behind this song. It appeared as though it was all about the war and someone wanting to wake up when it was all over. However, Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, confessed there was a different story behind the track. Apparently, the song is in memory of the singer’s father who passed away when Billie Joe was still a child.

Harder to Breathe – Maroon 5

Many musicians use their real lives as inspiration for their tracks, and Adam Levine’s ex-girlfriend helped the singer to create many of the songs for Maroon 5’s first album. However, she wasn’t the one behind this famous song. Ithe banned confess that Harder to Breathe came about when the record label wouldn’t take the pressure off. It turned out they wanted more and more songs from the band who just couldn’t keep up. They released this track to make a point and accidentally started an incredible career for themselves in the process.

Although it can sometimes feel as though the artists are writing their songs for our ears only, it turns out there can often be a hidden meaning behind the lyrics that many of us may have never believed. So next time we’re singing along to our favorite songs, we could be chanting an anthem we never knew about. It appears that music really can be another language after all!
