You want to go to the gym, but you need your headphones, and you do not feel like dealing with the hassle of parking. You would totally write, but you have writer’s block, so you say “maybe tomorrow I will have an idea.” Additionally, why go all the way out to a party when you can stay at home and look at pictures of cats on the internet?
Congratulations, you still have yet to break you cycle of procrastination. “I just can not seem to find the motivation,” you say, clicking through your 93rd cat slide. So how about you make your own?
What?
Many people who are successful will not find motivation from external sources. It may work for a little while, but ultimately, the motivation comes from within themselves. And that motivation in and of itself take a lot of hard work and dedication to be realized.
There are several steps to self motivation. One of the first things to do is set up a routine for yourself. You know that you want to run or write or go to the gym at 7:15 every evening. But sometimes (a lot of times) you feel that you are too tired.
Physical routine
What you need to do therefore is just go and lace up your running shoes and put on running clothes. There, now you are sitting at home in running clothes, feeling ridiculous. Or you can just open up your writing program on your laptop and get a glass of water, signifying that you are starting to write. All in all, you must have some sort of physical routine which starts the mental process of beginning to do what you need to do.
This is because the more physically involved your body is, the more you will subconsciously be ready and prepared to do what it is you need to do. And that will make you more likely to fulfil your obligation to yourself. Remember, the only person you are cheating on a cheat day is yourself.
Adversarial mindset
How do the pros find the motivation to be the best? Especially when it takes so much hard work? Well, they must just have some sort of a life hack that you do not know about. And they do. That hack is… working hard and working consistently. If you want to be the best and the greatest at whatever it is you are doing, you need to be prepared all the time, no matter what your motivation level is.
You need to be doing those routines and getting your mind geared up to do whatever it is you need to do both when you are down and when you are up. This is the only way that you will be able to succeed and get done what you need to get done.
