Helpful ways to deal with loneliness

In today’s society, there is an expectation that we should always be connected. Whether it be texting, shopping, watching television or emailing, it never ends. But these connections are not always the most meaningful.  There is no magic solution to solve loneliness, however, there are certain efforts that can be made in order to ease the feelings of being alone.  Understanding your loneliness and then creating a plan of action can give you a new perspective and can allow you to approach it in a healthy way. Here are 5 ways to deal with loneliness.


Understand that loneliness is an emotion

Emotions are a very powerful thing. Negative emotions can make you feel anxious and desperate. Loneliness is a more of an emotion than a reality, and therefore it can be replaced with another more positive emotion such as hope.

Reach out

When you are feeling lonely, think about the fact that asking for help can change this. Whether it be a family member, a friend or a co-worker, sometimes we need the people in our lives to be there by our side.  Don’t be afraid to ask for the support that you need and reach out to others.

Learn how to be alone

Sometimes there are circumstances that cause us to be alone for periods of time. The loneliness is often more painful than the alone-ness. Basically, these two things are not the same. By learning how to be alone, you can, therefore, control your negative such as writing, meditation or exercise are productive and positive behaviors ways to accept alone-ness, and will feed your soul during hard times.



You surely have some talents that others do not, as well as unique experiences. Give your time to a person or a cause that will bring you meaning. The more you give, the more filled you will feel. Finding the courage to share your heart will bring you up to a place you did not know existed.

Fulfill your passions

We all have a purpose for our lives, and the more we fulfill our passions,  we are more likely to find people similar to ourselves and to find happiness. Their presence in our lives is a helpful way to heal feelings of loneliness.
