There is simply nothing better than a whirlwind celebrity love story. From the first announcement of the relationship to the romantic engagement to the lavish star-studded weddings, fans are always desperate to discover all the details about the love lives of the rich and famous people in Hollywood.
While many of the world’s most recognized faces find love far beyond the confines of their A-list professions, there are a fair share of celebs who have discovered romance on the sets of beloved and memorable movies or TV shows.
Actors and actresses often spend months upon months cooped up with their dashing co-stars in remote and beautiful locations. It’s no wonder that real-life chemistry often blooms between leading men and women once the cameras stop rolling. While many couples have been outright about their relationship statuses, there are those who have been tight-lipped about the nature of love affairs with their co-stars.
We’ve curated a combination of the the top secret celeb romances that were successfully hidden from the public. Some of the few recognizable faces to grace our list are Penelope Cruz and Megan Fox. Discover more celebs who secretly got cosy with their co-stars far from the lens of the camera.
The ever-so-handsome Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence played Gale Hawthorne and Katniss Everdeen in the hit movie franchise, The Hunger Games. Unsuspecting fans might be surprised to learn that Jennifer admitted that the pair shared a few kisses both on and off camera. The actress appeared on Andy Cohen’s talk show, Watch What Happens Live, and set rumors to rest, saying, “Liam and I grew up together. Liam’s real hot. What would you have done?”
Romancing the throne
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was one of the comedy sitcoms that epitomized ‘90s television. The man at the center of the hit show, Will Smith, was a sought-after heartthrob. The lovely Tyra Banks starred in a few 1993 episodes of the series and wooed the Prince himself. Banks and Smith actually went on to date for a year following the model’s stint on the show. After calling it quits, Banks became a Victoria’s Secret angel while Will found long-lasting love with Jada Pinkett.
There wasn’t a ‘90s TV fanatic around who could resist the drama of Beverly Hills, 90210. While speculation surrounding the co-stars’ behind-the-scenes romances have long made the rounds, Tori Spelling is responsible for confirming one particularly juicy rumor. In 2015, Spelling took a polygraph test and admitted that she had had a secret relationship with her hunky co-star, Brian Austin Green. After the pair parted, Green married fellow actress Megan Fox. Spelling has sadly been unlucky in love, subsequently marrying and divorcing twice.
Nothing but a number
Milo Ventimiglia and the beautiful Hayden Panettiere first graced our television screens together in 2006 in the spectacular supernatural series, Heroes. Despite the sizable age gap between the two actors – Hayden was 19 while Milo was 31 – the pair began an offscreen romance. The relationship would last two years before the co-stars called it quits. When asked about what he learned from romancing a co-star, Milo shared, “Never do it again… But I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Geeks in love
Linda Cardellini and Jason Segel might be recognizable Hollywood faces today, but back in 1999, the two actors were just starting out in Judd Apatow’s short-lived but much-loved series, Freaks and Geeks. Linda and Jason played a pair of high school misfits who would keep their romance up beyond the show’s set. Many have speculated that Segal actually used his break up with the star as inspiration for his screenplay for the comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
To the delight of Dawson’s Creek fans, the series concluded with Joey finding love in the arms of Pacey. It seems Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson took their fictional romance to heart when they began dating following the show’s conclusion. In a 1998 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Holmes shared: “I’m just going to say that I met somebody last year, I fell in love, I had my first love.” The brunette beauty later shared a high profile marriage and subsequent divorce with superstar, Tom Cruise.
The Transformers movie franchise capitalized on the steamy chemistry between co-stars, Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf. While the pair played lovers on the big screen, it has long been speculated that the actors also spent some quality time together in between takes. The actor vaguely confirmed the fling in a recent interview with Details magazine, ambiguously stating, “The time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry on screen.”
High school sweethearts
Saved By the Bell was the quintessential ‘90s sitcom that shared the adventures of a group of high schoolers navigating the challenging waters of adolescence. Just like their characters, the cast appears to have been a hopeless group of loved-up teens. Mark-Paul Gosselaar, aka Zack Morris, told People magazine in 2009: “All of us dated at one point or another.” Tiffani Thiessen who played the lovable and drooled-over Miss Kelly Kapowski, added, “Did we have crushes on our co-stars? Absolutely. But we were so young!”
Fishing for love
Gossip Girl fans might be scandalized by the mere suggestion that Chuck Bass could have romanced anyone other than Blair Waldorf, but behind-the-scenes rumors suggest this could actually be true. Ed Westwick, who played the devilish and dapper character, actually wooed Jessica Szohr on the set of the wildly popular teen series. While their onscreen characters loathed one another, love bloomed between takes for the young actors. The pair reportedly dated for two years from 2008 to 2010 before parting ways.
Set in ink
The 2007 film Wild Child starred the lovely Emma Roberts opposite the blue-eyed actor, Alex Pettyfer. The pair fell head over heels, so much so, that lovestruck Pettyfer actually got Emma’s initials tattooed on his ring finger. Though the coupling didn’t last as long as his ink will, the actor told Glamor magazine, “I got a girl’s name tattooed on my ring finger because I was in love. We’ve broken up, but I don’t live in regret.”
Jennifer Aniston has had her fair share of high profile Hollywood relationships, but one particular romance may have flown under the radar. Paul Rudd and Aniston reportedly shared their first kiss as childhood friends. The pair would be reunited when Rudd was cast as Phoebe’s love interest, Mike, on Friends. Years later, the actors would co-star in the comedy Wanderlust. When asked if it was strange to kiss as such long-time buddies, Aniston cheekily responded, “Nah. I’ve kissed him for years.” Rudd added, “We’ve made out for decades.”
CW’s dramatic series Riverdale is based on the world of the all-American Archie comics. The interpretation is not only jam-packed with spooky mysteries but a whole lot of onscreen love. Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse star as Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones. Since the very start of the show, fans have speculated that the pair were indeed a real-life couple. After months of tight-lipped secrecy, the actors finally confirmed their relationship when they attended the 2018 Met Gala looking very much in love.
Matthew McConaughey has made a habit out of finding love with his many beautiful female co-stars. The chiseled leading man starred alongside Penelope Cruz in the 2005 action adventure film, Sahara. McConaughey was hopeless under the exotic charms of the actress and they soon began dating following the film’s release. The actor reportedly dumped Cruz after spotting his future wife, Camila Alves, in a crowded bar. McConaughey would eventually marry the Brazilian model in 2012.
A dramatic exit
The set of Beverly Hills, 90210 was never without drama. Yet another secret romance occurred beyond the camera unbeknownst to the show’s fans. Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley covertly dated while filming the series, much to the dismay of their fellow co-stars. Tori Spelling was apparently so unimpressed by the pairing she sought the intervention of the show’s producer, her father, Aaron Spelling. Doherty was unceremoniously fired from the series amidst a dramatic break up with Priestley.
No longer strangers
Unless you live on an internet-free deserted island, you’ve probably at least heard of Netflix’s hit series, Stranger Things. The sci-fi show boasts a pretty spectacular cast of up-and-comers, including Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton. The co-stars have deflected rumors of an offscreen romance for months, claiming they are ‘just friends.’ But even the actors couldn’t deny their evident romance when they were photographed kissing in the streets of London. The couple are set to return in the third season of the show set to be released in July 2019.
A secret ceremony
Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser played secret lovers on the iconic series, Mad Men. It seems art does in fact imitate real life. After meeting on set, a fairytale romance sparked between the actors. The pair are notoriously quiet about their private life but the co-stars actually went on to marry in a secret, intimate ceremony back in 2014. Though few fans know of their low-profile union, Bledel gave birth to the couple’s first child in 2016.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off remains an iconic comedy classic. One of the many features of the film that left a lasting impression on audiences was Buller’s relationship with his belligerent older sister. While the onscreen siblings loved to hate one another, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were far from enemies. Their romantic relationship would be dramatically revealed when the pair were involved in a fatal car accident in 1987. Today, Broderick has been happily married to actress Sarah Jessica Parker for 21 years.
Jennifer loved up
Comedian Jamie Kennedy first met Jennifer Love Hewitt while filming the series, Ghost Whisperer. The pair embarked on a year-long romance during their time on the show. The burden of dating a celeb got the better of Kennedy and the couple called it quits in 2010. The actor has since opened up about the hardship of a relationship in the spotlight, saying, “People weren’t rooting for a good relationship. That was really hard to deal with. You see snarky headlines and eventually you just have to stop reading that stuff.”
More than friends
Friends gave television audiences some of history’s most hilarious celebrity cameos. One of the most memorable A-list appearances was offered by Julia Roberts. Roberts played Chandler’s scorned high school classmate who would seek out revenge when the pair met as adults. The cameo led to an actual romance between Roberts and Matthew Perry. Sadly, the pairing would be short lived as Perry was battling with personal demons at the time of the couple’s brief romance.
He’s my man
She’s the Man hit theaters back in 2006 when Channing Tatum and Amanda Bynes were two of Hollywood’s rising young stars. The actors shared a heated onscreen relationship that seemingly continued when the cameras stopped rolling. Cast members of the production reportedly spotted the pair kissing off-camera numerous times. Apparently, the brief romance was a light-hearted on-set fling that never continued once filming ended. The sneaky relationship has never been confirmed by either party, but we sure hope it’s true!
He “abducted” her heart
While Taylor Lautner’s character in the thriller film Abduction may have been a lie, his feelings for his co-star, Lily Collins were not. A relationship between the two was never confirmed, but sources claim that the two had a short-lived love affair. They apparently split right before the film premiere and it made for an awkward event because they barely spoke to one another. Regardless if the couple didn’t work out, the way Taylor spoke of Lily was just adorable, saying that there was a strong chemistry between them.
A very Brady bunch
They might have played brother and sister onscreen, but Maureen McCormick and Barry Williams were a bit more than that once the cameras stopped rolling. The Brady Bunch stars dated behind the scenes and McCormick even opened up about the relationship in her memoir, 35 years after the show ended. She described how she felt about their coupling and explained how sometimes a part of her thought it was a bit weird that she was dating her “brother,” but it was only a small part of her.
Secret love story
While all of Rory’s relationships in Gilmore Girls had their own charm and we loved almost all of them, there was one that stood out above the others. That was her longterm relationship with whom we thought was the love of her life: Jess. It turns out that much of the romance on-set was actually real. Alexis Bledel and Milo Ventimiglia actually dated in secret while filming. Unfortunately, like Rory and Jess, Alexis and Milo didn’t work out in real life either.
No matter how long or how hard Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev tried to hide their relationship, we all knew there was something between them. Though Nina’s Vampire Diaries character Elena had a hard time choosing between love interests on the show, the actress was clearly all about Damon (Ian’s character) in real life. The two finally announced they were a couple in 2011, but unfortunately broke up in 2013, not that this lasted long – they were seen together often after that. Somerhalder is now married to actress Nikki Reed.
Age doesn’t matter in terms of love
Ryan Gosling may have played a deranged genius in the thriller Murder by Numbers, but apparently Sandra Bullock loved it. We all know Gosling is actually a total sweetheart, so it was probably that part she was interested in – or perhaps she predicted what a heartthrob he would turn into. Either way, the two dated for a bit after meeting on this film. A 16 year age difference was not enough to get in their way and we love this pairing almost as much as him with actress Eva Medes.
Bradley Cooper is known for being the hilarious and handsom actor that he is, while Renée Zellweger is known for her acting skills and blonde bombshell looks as well. The two made a cute pair for about two years after meeting on the set of their film Case 39. Apparently, Zellweger even moved from where she was living in New York so she could be closer to Cooper. Eventually sources claim that the rise of Cooper’s career led to the two splitting.
No mystery here
Perhaps it was because they were two of the youngest cast members on the set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, or perhaps they were destined to find each other. We may never know what brought Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson together, but whatever it was we can thank it for an adorable relationship. Unfortunately, as things sometimes go, this relationship was short-lived, only lasting a few months and the public didn’t even find out about it until the two announced it…after it had already ended.
Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson could have been the power couple of the center if they hadn’t kept things so private throughout their five-year relationship. The two even lived together! Before even meeting on the set of 1981 film Excalibur, Neeson had a bit of a crush on Mirren. He said years later that it took one look at her the first time they met to know he would fall in love. Even today, they joke around and talk openly about their time together, like old friends might.
While David Arquette’s most well-known relationship was with Friends star Courtney Cox, he admitted to having also dated actress Drew Barrymore. Even as recently as March 2018, Barrymore denies the relationship, but Arquette insists that it did happen. The two played siblings on the teen drama Never Been Kissed back in 1999, and apparently their sibling love onset was actually stemmed from a romantic love that was several years before the movie. Barrymore has definitely got some explaining to do!
Time to love
Is there a handsom Hollywood hottie that Sandra Bullock has not dated? It must be her extreme talent as an actress that wooed this dashing actor, though her humorous personality and being totally gorgeous probably didn’t hurt either. Matthew McConaughey is a southern gentleman that has had ladies crushing on him since the beginning of his time in Hollywood. It was Bullock, however, who caught his eye while filming A Time to Kill together back in 1996. They didn’t admit it at the time, but they spent two years together.
Sure, it was just acting…
Here she goes again! Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds stole the hearts of rom-com fans everywhere with their wonderful performances in The Proposal. The 2009 flick caught audience’s attention for multiple reasons, one being the hilarity behind it and another being the stars’ undeniable chemistry. They never confirmed, but rumors spread like crazy that the actors were actually not acting, but simply portraying their true feelings in the movie. The two may have had a love-hate relationship on screen, but it seemed to be all love off screen.
Big bang love!
While this one is no longer a secret, it was while it was happening. Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki took their TV love and turned it into reality for about two years behind everyone’s back. Once fans found out about this, they were overjoyed with the idea of a secret love, but later devastated upon learning the actors split up. At least the relationship ended on good terms and Galecki claims he couldn’t be happier for his co-star’s recent marriage.
Three tree hill
One Tree Hill fans had a hard time keeping up with Sophia Bush’s character (Brooke Davis). She was nice one day, full-on mean girl the next. Her love life was even harder to follow. Brooke eventually found true love in the arms of Julian (Austin Nichols) and as it turns out the two dated on and off for four years in real life too. Bush was also married to OTH star Chad Michael Murray and dated James Lafferty, too. Those relationships ended, but we still hope Bush finds the one.
Back in 2001, Gwyneth Paltrow and Luke Wilson shared the screen in the comedy film The Royal Tenenbaums. Rumor (and pictures) have it that maybe they shared more than that though. Paltrow claimed at the time that the two were just friends, but they sure were seen out and about a lot together. While we may never know exactly what went on behind closed door with these actors, we approve if there was a secret romance going on. If not, well that’s okay, too.
The acclaimed crime series Fargo is all about the drama, but sometimes there’s a bit behind the scenes we don’t hear so much about. For instance, you may remember the married couple Peggy and Ed Blumquist (played by Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons) from season two. The two have actually been together in real life since 2016, have a child together, and are engaged. If you didn’t know, you’re not the only one. The actors keep their relationship extremely private after falling in love on the set of the show.
