Thompson made her film debut in 1983 with Jaws 3-D but she is probably mostly famous and recognized from her role in 1985 as Lorraine Baines McFly, the mom of Marty McFly who was played by Michael J Fox, in the Back to the Future film trilogy. She later appeared in movies including All the Right Moves and The Wild life, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Wizard of Loneliness, and had a significant appearance in Nightbreaker a film which earned her a nomination for a CableACE Award.

The actress has pretty much dropped her film career and leaned more towards the small screen. Her recent work includes playing Kathryn Kennish, on the ABC series Switched at Birth. Thompson was also in season 19 of Dancing with the Stars where she finished sixth. She has been married to director, Howard Deutch, since 1989, whom she met on Some Kind of Wonderful.
