However, there is one couple that appears to have been on everyone’s lips the last few years: Chip and Joanna Gaines. The husband and wife team have often turned the most run-down houses into incredible family homes thanks to their renovation show Fixer Upper.
Although the couple are used to helping others thanks to their incredible talents, they have since bought their own brand new adventure to keep them busy.
[post_page_title]Doing it together[/post_page_title]
HGTV has welcomed many hit TV shows over the years, but it wasn’t long before Fixer Upper became a favorite with fans everywhere. Chip and Joanna Gaines were the leading couple behind the series as they would take families to three different houses that all needed a repair or two.
Working together

Sadly, Fixer Upper came to an end in April 2018 as they bid goodbye to HGTV. However, this was only the beginning as the couple now had all the time they needed to work on their brand new adventure – their own castle to renovate.

[post_page_title]Searching for a challenge[/post_page_title]
The couple have found many ways to relax and unwind over the years, but it appears as though there is one that has grabbed Joanna’s attention more than others: gardening. Yes, this designer admits that heading out into the yard is the perfect way to bring her entire family together as they can all busy themselves with their own jobs. However, no matter how hard they tried, it seemed that Chip and Joanna couldn’t satisfy their renovation bug.
Searching for a challenge

They needed more. Perhaps that’s why they recently purchased a castle in the City of Waco, Texas? The property is in their hometown, and Cottonland Castle comes with plenty of history. Chip and Joanna are known for being able to make a property’s personality shine through in the renovations, and it looked as this was going to be one of their biggest challenges to date.

[post_page_title]A long history[/post_page_title]
Amazingly, the castle was first started back around 1890. However, it took more than 20 years to complete as Cottonland Castle was finally finished in 1913. All of that hard work was in aid of Alfred Abeel, a businessman in need of somewhere to stay – and mark his claim on the area. Although Alfred has since passed, the castle still remains as one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. That’s not all.
A long history

Cottonland Castle was even the inspiration behind the name of the city’s neighborhood, Castle Heights. Now, the property covers 6,700 square feet as the stone building towers above the majority of its surroundings. It might have been standing for over 100 years, but this castle needs a lot to bring it into the 21st century. With so many projects under their belt already, could this have been a purchase too far for Chip and Joanna?

[post_page_title]A dream come true[/post_page_title]
Many people have grown to know the castle. Chip and Joanna are no exception. It turns out the couple have been watching the property for the last 20 years. Unfortunately, even after a number of attempts to make it their own, they were never able to make their dreams come true – until now. Yes, 2019 finally marked the year the couple became the proud new owners of Cottonland Castle.
A dream come true

However, their new home has been empty for the last 20 years as it seems that no one can renovate it the way that they liked. The castle was last bought in 2014 by Dirk Obbink. The classicist lives in England but often holds lectures at Waco’s Baylor University. It looked as though the castle was going to become his new home until Dirk realized he needed a lot more money than he imagined to make his renovation dreams come true.

[post_page_title]Paying the price[/post_page_title]
The castle was initially listed on the market for $425,000. However, it is yet to be confirmed how much Chip and Joanna paid for the house of their dreams. The couple may have forked out the whole asking price just to make their wishes come to life.
Paying the price

Although it might not seem like a high asking price for an entire castle and the landmark of a city, Chip and Joanna know the property comes with a long list of renovations that could be about to cost a lot more than they ever imagined.

[post_page_title]Extra space[/post_page_title]
Thankfully, it seems as though Chip and Joanna will be getting a lot for their money. Cottonland Castle comes with three bedrooms meaning the family will be greeted to one more than their current home. Plus, the castle comes with two and a half bathrooms.
Extra space

Hopefully, there will be plenty of space for everyone! However, the family won’t be moving anytime soon. Many owners have tried, and many owners have failed to renovate this impressive structure. Could that really be about to change with the new owners?

[post_page_title]Drab to fab[/post_page_title]
The couple have grown known for their impressive renovations skills, and it turns out that Chip and Joanna don’t stop when the cameras finish rolling. No, they have worked on many of their own houses over the years, too.
Drab to fab

Their farmhouse is one of the many that has had the Gaines family treatment over the years as the pair spent 18 months making their dreams come to life. In fact, they were able to turn it from drab to fab in no time. Thankfully, we got to see glimpses of their creations on social media.

[post_page_title]Creating space[/post_page_title]
The farmhouse might have only had two bedrooms, but the couple were soon able to make the most of the space they had to hand. One of their many tricks the pair have up their sleeve is to create as much open space as possible.
Creating space

That’s right; the kitchen, dining room, and living room were all knocked through to create one large room instead. They might have removed some walls, but Chip and Joanna were able to add in a ton of extra space to watch their family grow.

[post_page_title]Keeping it simple[/post_page_title]
The kitchen is an important room for many families, and it looks as though Joanna is no exception. This designer confessed to Country Living that her kitchen is the “heart of the home for me.” The farmhouse was the perfect place to bring her creation to life.
Keeping it simple

Joanna opted for open shelves as well as a classic white color scheme teamed with simple woods and granite countertops to make everything as simple. The color all came from the addition of pots and pans and cookbooks instead.

[post_page_title]Creating a centerpiece[/post_page_title]
One of the main selling points of the farmhouse was the floor to ceiling brick fireplace that took center stage in the home. However, the couple wanted to go all out with their impressive feature. It wasn’t long before it was transformed into a plant sanctuary.
Creating a centerpiece

The greenery was enough to breathe life into the room while the faux deer head and candles added a whole new layer to it all. While they were able to unwind in the farmhouse, will Chip and Joanna be able to find peace in their new home?

[post_page_title]Unique selling points[/post_page_title]
Thankfully, it seems as though Chip and Joanna will have plenty of fireplaces to keep themselves busy as their new castle comes complete with no less than eight fireplaces. Some are grand while others are more understated.
Unique selling points

Amazingly, one of the fireplaces in the castle is carved out of pink granite while another is formed from French Caen stone. The pair have been able to work wonders with old fireplaces over the years. Now, they have plenty to play with.

[post_page_title]Some impressive features[/post_page_title]
The fireplaces aren’t the only incredible addition to Cottonland Castle. The entire building is thought to be German-inspired meaning there are some unusual architectural additions in the castle that aren’t often seen in the surrounding buildings.
Some impressive features

The best bit? The castle comes complete with a nine-foot solid oak front door that is thought to weigh no less than 400 pounds. This is the perfect addition for Joanna to put to good use as she recycles some of the original characteristics of the build.

[post_page_title]Wooden features[/post_page_title]
It looks as though woodwork is one of the main features of the castle as every room appears to uncover a new layer of incredible talent. In fact, Honduran mahogany is a hugely appetizing addition to many of the rooms as it adds a classic twist on the space.
Wooden features

Many areas of the castle need a lot of work before they are fully restored. However, the majority of the wood appears to be in immaculate condition meaning it should be a simple project to undertake.

[post_page_title]Well-needed updates[/post_page_title]
There are many aspects of the home that will be restored along the way, but it appears as though Chip and Joanna have one main goal in mind: to complete the well-deserved yet long overdue renovations that need to be complete.
Well-needed updates

The castle was finished more than 100 years ago meaning there is a lot of work that still needs to happen to make sure it’s brought into the 21st century while still keeping up with the characteristics of the period.

[post_page_title]Leaving their mark[/post_page_title]
Cottonland Castle is still filled with signs and marks from the many other owners who had tried to renovate the space over the years. Sadly, it was all too much for the majority of the previous occupants.
Leaving their mark

Some had struggles with money as the renovations cost more than they ever believed. However, it looks as though others might have lost interest. Chip and Joanna? They have never let a project get them down – and they don’t look as though they’re going to start anytime soon.

[post_page_title]Hiding places[/post_page_title]
It can be easy to get lost in the impressive, unique features that are found all around the castle. The diamond-paned windows are some of the many aspects that help to bring the castle’s architecture back to life.
Hiding places

The many number of tucked away hiding places could be about to become the perfect spots for all kinds of areas. They could be the ideal location for a reading snug or even act as an adventure spot for the kids. There certainly are a host of possibilities.

[post_page_title]Saving the pennies[/post_page_title]
Quartersawn oak is yet another wood that features prominently throughout the home, but that still doesn’t mean the renovations are going to be easy. In fact, they could soon cost more than the castle itself.
Saving the pennies

Some estimate they could be anywhere between $600,000 and $1 million depending on the additions the couple want to make. A new kitchen and dining room are typically a must of Joanna. However, will they be able to afford it all with a young family?

[post_page_title]A new show[/post_page_title]
That’s not all this new castle brings. As well as marking a new chapter in their life, it looks as though Cottonland Castle could be the start of a brand new show, too. The couple have yet to confirm any of the rumors.
A new show

However, a supposed new network on the way would mark the perfect chance to show off all their talents. After all, showcasing their personal project could be all they need to kick things off their brand new adventure as it’s not every day you get to see a castle renovated from the ground up.

[post_page_title]Spotted on camera[/post_page_title]
As if that wasn’t enough, many onlookers and locals have confessed there have been camera crews heading in and out of the castle. It looks as though the rumors might hold more truth than we first thought after all.
Spotted on camera

Some have questioned whether Chip and Joanna will flip the property or whether they hope to turn it into a B&B. However, after waiting so long to get their hands on the castle, could they really see it disappear out their hands already? Only time will tell.

[post_page_title]All about interiors[/post_page_title]
While there’s no doubt about the fact that the outside of their 129-year-old castle is truly something special, there’s not much that the couple could – or would want – to change in terms of the exterior.
All about interiors

What’s really got fans of Chip and Joanna is the fact that these two fixer-uppers have an incredible interior to deal with. It’s unlike anything they have ever worked with before, but they’re no strangers to transforming the inside of a house to make it their home.

[post_page_title]Space to roam[/post_page_title]
With a huge amount of space to work with, there’s no doubt about the fact that this couple could go wild in terms of their interior design. While it’s unlikely that they will make huge changes in terms of the inside structure, they can add their own little touches here and there to transform it into something new and unique.
Space to roam

They have done this before, and their current home is by-far one of their biggest achievements to date. After all, they put a huge amount of time and effort into it.

[post_page_title]All on camera[/post_page_title]
It’s not known yet whether Chip and Joanna plan to carry out the extensive renovation and decoration of their castle on camera, but if it’s anything like their own home, they’ll keep things secret until they are finally happy with the results.
All on camera

In fact, it took the couple a whopping 18 months to completely finish their farmhouse, because they are just extremely busy people. Their farmhouse was low down on their list of priorities with a business to contend with, but they got there in the end.

[post_page_title]An impressive kitchen[/post_page_title]
They often say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Because of this, it should probably come as no surprise to learn that Chip and Joanna created a kitchen that would be the focal point in their open-plan farmhouse.
An impressive kitchen

With an island in the center of the kitchen, wooden flooring, white cabinets, and clean metal appliances give the rustic farmhouse a modern edge. We can imagine the whole family cooking up a storm in this kitchen, and we bet the kids love baking in here.

[post_page_title]Keeping it light and airy[/post_page_title]
Although there’s no doubt about the fact that Chip and Joanna are extremely busy people, they always make time for their family. So, they created themselves a large, open-plan eating and lounging space that would be fun for all of the family.
Keeping it light and airy

They can not only eat at the large wooden table, but they can then settle down on the couch for a game of Monopoly or just to talk about their day. While it’s not a huge space, it’s a space that’s comfortable for their family.

[post_page_title]Where the magic happens[/post_page_title]
Of course, no house would be complete without a master bedroom, and Chip and Joanna created something special for their room. This large space has been filled with soft furnishings and neutral tones – just like the rest of the house.
Where the magic happens

The giant bed looks extremely inviting, but the couple haven’t filled the rest of the room up with random possessions or accessories. They have kept things simple and made sure that everything in there is there for a reason. That reason is to be practical, while also looking aesthetically pleasing.

[post_page_title]Wooden accents[/post_page_title]
When it comes to doing up their castle, they can rest easy knowing that they have worked with certain materials before. To create the en-suite in their master bedroom, Chip and Joanna worked with beautiful and ornate wood.
Wooden accents

This doorway soon became a focal point within their living space and something that catches the eye – especially with the lanterns and the foliage. With so many old relics and accents within their castle, they get the chance to play with these materials again.

[post_page_title]An old-school feel[/post_page_title]
In fact, Chip and Joanna created a house that features an old-school vibe in the form of their farmhouse. With wooden flooring and chandeliers, they will probably be able to take ideas from their home and slide them into their new castle.
An old-school feel

This is especially true if they do decide to jump ship and move from their farmhouse into the castle as their new family home. Their daughters would probably love a room that has old features but is still light and modern for them to enjoy.

[post_page_title]Making it homely[/post_page_title]
The key to any house renovation is to keep things homely, and this couple have learned just how important that is over the course of their career. Although they could easily make and design houses that are perfect in every way, these aren’t the kind of homes that people want to live in.
Making it homely

People want to buy houses that are full of character, personality, and houses that feel like home. They have done just that in their own farmhouse, and have filled their stairwell with pictures of their family.

[post_page_title]Space to enjoy[/post_page_title]
Alongside this, the couple knows that families especially need space to enjoy their homes. In their farmhouse, the couple converted the loft space into something that could be utilized and transformed into a crafting room for their children.
Space to enjoy

While they designed it to be bare in terms of its decoration and its furniture, there was a reason for this. By doing this, they can allow their kids to do their own decorating. With Chip and Joanna, every decision has sound reasoning behind it, and we can only imagine that this will be the case with their castle.

[post_page_title]A home office[/post_page_title]
If you’re familiar with Chip and Joanna, you’ll know that they have numerous strings to their bows. Not only are they fixer-uppers, but they are also television personalities, business owners, and parents.
A home office

This leaves them with a lot to juggle, which is why they knew that they had to create a home office when they were renovating their farmhouse. They made this giant space in the loft for themselves and their staff, and fans can’t help but wonder whether they will fill their new castle with an office.

[post_page_title]Growing as we go[/post_page_title]
Although Chip and Joanna don’t have a huge amount of spare time to contend with, when they do have a rare day off from work, they like to spend time outside and in their greenhouse. They have all kinds of plants and vegetables in this greenhouse, and it’s been suggested that Joanna especially finds solace in here.
Growing as we go

It’s little touches like this can really make a house a home, and we can assume that the couple will want to add little things like this to their castle renovation. After all, there’s going to be space!

[post_page_title]Space for family time[/post_page_title]
Within every house that Chip and Joanna fix up – whether that be their own projects or those for HGTV’s Fixer Uppers – the couple ensures that there is space for family time.
Space for family time

They know just how important this time is to them, and they have designed their house to ensure that they and their children can be doing all kinds of different things while still in the same room. They did this with their kitchen and living area, and this becomes even more special during the holiday season.

[post_page_title]Support from all angles[/post_page_title]
While these two certainly have their work cut out for them over the next coming months, or however long it takes them to fix up their castle, they know they’ll have support along the way.
Support from all angles

Their children know that their parents are working hard to provide a better future for them, and they understand that they are doing something they love at the same time. This teaches their children the value of hard work, and that’s something that is priceless to Chip and Joanna.

[post_page_title]Getting started[/post_page_title]
It’s not known whether Chip and Joanna have got started on their renovations yet, and they have been pretty quiet on social media in terms of their new property, but it will be exciting when they finally get started.
Getting started

Renovation is something they have built their television career around, and interior design is something they have created their Magnolia business around, so they certainly know their stuff. However, Chip and Joanna have never tackled anything as big as a castle before.

[post_page_title]Something completely different[/post_page_title]
Yes, this new project will be a far cry from what they’re used to. While they have made Waco their base over the years, many of these houses have been fairly modern-but-dilapidated houses that have been transformed with relative ease.
Something completely different

They have run into structural struggles and have had to majorly overhaul designs sometimes, but we can imagine that things are much harder in terms of what they can and can’t do with their castle. It’s no ordinary house, and it’s not something they have experience with.

[post_page_title]A modern aesthetic[/post_page_title]
One of the main reasons for this is because fans of HGTV’s Fixer Uppers have been able to get a feel for Chip and Joanna’s aesthetic over the course of its run. While Chip focuses on the building work and the structural side of things, Joanna comes in and transforms the interior with her modern aesthetic.
A modern aesthetic

She focuses on modern and rustic interiors that come complete with hardwood floors, cladding on the outside of the house, and neutral tones. Will she be able to do the same with a castle?

[post_page_title]Not the only thing[/post_page_title]
Of course, these guys aren’t just content with buying a castle and doing it up. While they continue to work on plans for this project and raise their family together, they are also maintaining their lives as television personalities and keeping their businesses going.
Not the only thing

In fact, they can currently see the finish line in terms of the Magnolia coffee shop that they have been building, and they even plan to build a boutique hotel in 2021. There’s so much to do in so little time.

[post_page_title]More to their plates[/post_page_title]
With so much in the pipeline, it’s hard to understand how these two will be able to keep adding more to their plates. They are already so full, and adding a castle renovation to the list is not going to be easy.
More to their plates

One of the main reasons for this is because the castle has been empty for around two decades. When this happens, certain areas of any property can fall into disrepair, and it takes even longer for them to be fixed and transformed into something extraordinary.

[post_page_title]A costly process[/post_page_title]
As if that wasn’t enough, this process is not going to be cheap. Whenever Chip and Joanna do decide to put one foot in front of the other and get started on their castle renovation, they’ll soon realize that their incredible choice in property will come at a cost.
A costly process

Of course, they’re not short on money with a net worth of $18 million under their belt, but that’s still a hefty price to pay out. Let’s just hope that they manage to transform it into a money-maker.

[post_page_title]A new network[/post_page_title]
Believe it or not, but Fixer Upper might not have been the last we get to see of Chip and Joanna Gaines. No, there have been many rumors that the couple will soon be teaming up with Discovery to create their very own network. There might not be anything set in stone, but it looks like this couple still have plenty more yet to give on TV. It’s thought Chip and Joanna want to fill their new network.
A new network

This means everything from cooking shows to children’s series, and, of course, a few home renovation shows or two along the way. The couple have plenty of experience with young ones as they are currently busy raising their five children, but Joanna confesses that she needed to learn how to have fun again. Their own network was the perfect start of the challenge.

HGTV has been home to some of the biggest stars over the years.
