[post_page_title]The plan[/post_page_title]

A group of friends were feeling adventurous one afternoon when they asked themselves one simple question: “Can you make a tire out of duct tape?” These friends weren’t the type to talk a big game, and not follow it up with action.

They immediately found the car they wanted to use, and got to work. Would it be able to drive? And if so, how fast would the car be able to go? Very soon, they would have all the answers they needed.

[post_page_title]How many rolls?[/post_page_title]

Now that they had the car, it was time to take off the tire. They went ahead and did that, and then separated the rubber from the inner part of the wheel itself (so that they could add the duct tape).

They asked themselves, “How many rolls of duct tape do you think we’re gonna need for this?” One of their own, a young man named Chau, estimated that they would need 50 rolls. There was only one way to find out – so they got moving.

[post_page_title]Walmart trip[/post_page_title]

They decided that Walmart was the place to go, and immediately headed over there. As far as duct tape goes, they decided to buy the Duck brand, which is supposedly very strong. They immediately started loading up their cart, clearly excited as they were doing it.

“We’re going to need as many as we can get.” Even though Chau had predicted that they would need 50 rolls, they figured they might as well load up on as much duct tape as possible.

[post_page_title]How to put the tape on[/post_page_title]

After getting purchasing boxes of duct tape from Walmart, they headed back to their garage. “Alright, this is it, now we start wrapping the wheel up,” said Orion the cameraman, who also happened to be their leader. But there was one small issue.

“How should we do this?” they asked. They were confident about their plans, but they weren’t sure what the best way to do it was. So they immediately start testing a few ideas out.

[post_page_title]First attempt[/post_page_title]

As you can see, their first attempt to get the duct tape on the metal wheel was an interesting one. The idea was to do the whole thing manually, with one person holding the wheel with a metal pole, while the others unload the tape.

As they tried it, it was clear that the distribution process of the tape wasn’t at its optimal level. “This is junk,” one said. They needed to find a better way to do it. “Put it on the tire machine,” another suggested.

[post_page_title]Using the tire machine[/post_page_title]

So they loaded the metal onto the tire machine. As it began to spin, it seemed to work pretty well, and one of them said, “This could be it.” But eventually, they found an issue with this method as well. “It’s kinda slow,” one complained.

Understanding that they needed to go through up to potentially 50 or more rolls of tape, they needed a faster process. Then they came up with another solution, one that seemed like a pretty good idea.

[post_page_title]Four at once[/post_page_title]

Instead of making the wheel go faster, they came up with a pretty brilliant plan – they would simply apply multiple rolls of duct tape simultaneously. As you can see, they eventually added up to four rolls of duct tape while the wheel was spinning.

This seemed to work pretty well for a while. “Oh yeah, that’s it right there guys,” said Orion. However, they still felt like there was an even faster solution – and soon enough they discovered it.

[post_page_title]Transferring to the car[/post_page_title]

Finally, they came up with a pretty awesome idea. Orion suggested, “Should we put this on the car?” Even though they still had a lot more duct tape to add, his logic was that they could simply add it a lot faster while it’s on the vehicle.

His friends thought it was a great plan, and they proceeded to put the wheel on the car. Once it was on there, Orion asked, “How much will we need to make a tire?” They would soon enough have the answer.

[post_page_title]More troubles[/post_page_title]

Their first plan of action was a pretty nifty one. They once again held three rolls of duct tape with the same metal pole from before, but this time the wheel was attached to the car. They thought that this was the perfect plan.

Orion advised his friend in the driver’s seat to put his foot on the gas “real slow.” But as he put his foot on the gas, the duct tape started ripping. They needed to move a bit closer in order for it to work properly.

[post_page_title]The perfect solution[/post_page_title]

“Alright, we’re resetting our method here,” said Orion. He was being very patient, but it was clear that he wanted to get all of that duct tape on the tire already. Once they had gotten closer to the wheel, Orion instructed the tape holder, “one at a time, for control.”

Once the wheel started moving, it looked like they had finally found a good method for adding the duct tape. They were finally in business! Now it was only a matter of time.

[post_page_title]Hot hands[/post_page_title]

Once they had discovered the optimal way of adding duct tire to the tire, they felt comfortable doing two at a time, and eventually three at a time. As the wheel spun faster and faster, the one holding the duct tape said, “It’s getting hot.”

Indeed, even though he was wearing gloves, his hands were starting to heat up because of all that friction. But he stayed strong and kept going, intent on finishing the job he boldly set out to do.

[post_page_title]Getting bigger[/post_page_title]

So they kept at it. The minutes passed, and they went through roll after roll after roll. Slowly but surely, the duct tape tire started getting thicker, as they knew it eventually would. But even though they speculated how it might look once it got bigger, there was nothing that could compare to the final product.

Very soon they would get there, but they had to be patient. They were so close to seeing what a duct tape tire looks like!

[post_page_title]Surprisingly heavy[/post_page_title]

Finally, they had finished with their task. As they took the tire off the car to get a better look, the one holding it exclaimed, “Woah! It’s definitely got some weight to it.” He passed it around to his friends, and they all found themselves equally surprised regarding how heavy the duct tape was.

As for the duct tape tire itself, it had become a thing of beauty, and they just stood there admiring it. But now it was time for the main event – testing it out.

[post_page_title]Chau needs his noodles[/post_page_title]

Apparently they had been working on their project for so long that Chau started to get hungry. He may have been excited to test out the tire, but not enough to hold off on a meal. After disappearing for a short while, he returned with a bowl of ramen noodles.

Orion teased him on the camera, saying, “Chau literally walks out with instant noodles.” Now that Chau had gotten his belly filled, it was time to get things moving.

[post_page_title]Bringing it down[/post_page_title]

Gripping the duct tape wheel tightly, he started to put it back on the car. Then it was time to lower the car down to the ground. “This is it,” Orion said. “How much do you think it’s gonna compress?” he asked his friends.

They all had a pretty consistent opinion: “None.” It seemed that everyone was pretty optimistic. “I don’t know what to expect here,” said Orion. They slowly brought the car down to the ground…

[post_page_title]Out the driveway[/post_page_title]

The wheel didn’t compress at all! They all got super excited, and Orion said, “That’s amazing! We have a duct tape tire! We have a full tire made out of duct tape.” Finally, after hours of tireless work, they hopped into the car, and prepared to hit the road.

The time for speculation and guesswork was over. The time had come for some real answers. So without further ado, they slowly backed out of the garage driveway.

[post_page_title]Hitting the road[/post_page_title]

They had finally hit the road! Orion excitedly said, “It’s holding shape all the way!” he said. “Dude, it doesn’t feel bad. It doesn’t feel different at all.” Chau added, “Dude, this feels regular.” Orion repeated, “It’s holding shape perfectly!”

Clearly, the boys were pretty happy about the way their experiment was going. But how long would the success last? Would things change once they tested the duct tape in harsher circumstances? They would soon find out.

[post_page_title]Further optimism[/post_page_title]

“Dude, I think we’re on to something here,” said Orion. Chau started laughing uncontrollably, and it was clear that he was delirious with excitement. “I can’t believe it worked,” he said. After driving for a little while longer, they proudly stated, “We have a duct tape tire!”

But now it was time to really test its limits. “Do a burnout!” one of them said. Finally, the capabilities of the tire would really get tested to its limit.

[post_page_title]Flooring it[/post_page_title]

Finally, they practically floored the gas pedal. If any innocent bystander was watching them, they’d feel a sense of fear, excitement, and awe as well, because these boys seemed like they didn’t have much regard for safety.

The wheels started spinning rapidly, and the car started to make a loud noise. It seemed at first that the tire was in complete support of the change, and the car was actually moving pretty fast! Did they have an answer?

[post_page_title]Pumping the brakes[/post_page_title]

The truth is that although the duct tape tire seemed to handle the pressure of the car’s speed pretty well, there was a feeling that the boys got that it would only be a matter of time before things would change.

They may have seemed reckless at first, but there was only so far they were willing to take the car. In other words, they weren’t about to take the car onto a busy street. But they still wanted some more action – so how did they test the tire next?

[post_page_title]The ultimate test[/post_page_title]

They realized that one way they could take the tire to its absolute limit without actually putting other cars in danger would be to do a stationary burnout.

So they decided to bring the car back to their garage, and really floor the pedal without letting up at all. This would be the ultimate test. How much friction could the tire withstand before imploding? How hot could the duct tape get before showing its true colors? There was only one way to find out.

[post_page_title]Stubbornly still[/post_page_title]

They pulled over, but the driver didn’t leave the car. He put the car in “Park,” and rammed on the gas pedal. Now it was time to see how long this wheel could last.

They expected to see the wheel spinning, but it wouldn’t budge. This was truly strange, because normally a proper would involve the rubber of a tire spinning rapidly, emanating a fair amount of smoke in the process. But the duct tape tire seemed, almost appropriately enough, stuck to the ground.

[post_page_title]Pure disbelief[/post_page_title]

The young men who were doing the experiment couldn’t believe what they were looking at. The gas pedal was being floored, and yet the tire didn’t move, and they could hear a piercing “screeching” sound coming from it. “It’s literally doing the non duct tape wheel!” said Orion. “The duct tape has too much grip!” said another. He even joked around to the camera, saying, “Hey FD, you might want to check out the duct tape tire.”

[post_page_title]Smoke on the water[/post_page_title]

Eventually, things took another turn. The wheel finally started spinning – albeit sporadically, and not very fast. Even so, smoke soon started rising from the car.

But instead of frightening the group of guys, it only made them more excited. Apparently, this wasn’t their first rodeo. As the smoke rose, the whole experience more exhilarating. The loudness of the tire mixed with the car engine was high, but so were their whooping voices, screaming at the top of their lungs.

[post_page_title]Cloud nine[/post_page_title]

Again, if you were an innocent bystander in the presence of these friends, you’d be witnessing people having the time of their lives. It’s quite apparent that these people are total car nerds, and we say this with the utmost respect.

Their open mouths and energetic bodies display pretty firmly how happy they are in this moment, as if they literally are on cloud nine. A perfect burnout, with a perfectly made duct tape tire. And the excitement wasn’t over.

[post_page_title]Slip n’ slide[/post_page_title]

In addition to the smoke that was rising, soon another strange thing started to happen – the car began to slide around.

Due to the fact that the friction of the duct tape was quite firm, the wheel spinning made the car appear to hydroplane – helped by the water that resided below the wheel. Orion and his friends were pretty impressed over the abilities of the duct tape tire. Indeed, it seemed to possess some powers that rubber tires didn’t.

[post_page_title]Under pressure[/post_page_title]

Finally, the driver relinquished his foot off of the gas pedal. It was time to analyze the situation thoroughly. “It worked!” said Orion. “We gotta get this DOT approved.” There were other things to check as well.

“Let’s check the air pressure,” said his friend. After checking it, they concluded that they had a “solid 0.” But for those of you who don’t care too much for all this technical babble, you’re sure to find what they did next pretty darn cool.

[post_page_title]Taking it off[/post_page_title]

After all that hard work they had put it, they made the decision to now take off the tire from the wheel.

This part of the exercise proved to be just as fun as everything else, because they were actually super curious to see what the fruits of their labor looked like on the inside. They used an electrical saw to cut open the tire, for this would be the most efficient. It was a lot tougher than they realized, but it was worth it.

[post_page_title]Dense cross-section[/post_page_title]

Once they finally hunked out a solid slice of duct tape from the tire, they couldn’t believe their eyes. “Look at the mass… like that’s solid,” Orion said.

He was completely correct in his assessment, for if we didn’t know any better, there’s no way we could’ve guessed that the tire was made out of duct tape. It looks like some tin foil wrapped iron tire (in our opinion), and they simply stood there and marveled its density.

[post_page_title]Popping it off[/post_page_title]

Now it was time to take off the tire from the inner wheel. However, the duct tape was so sticky that they had to use a metal bar to get it off of the wheel. But to their delight, it just popped off.

“I’m so happy that that came off like that.” Now that it was off, they were able to see its beautiful physicality from different angles. “Look at that,” exclaimed Orion. “That is pretty crazy actually.” It seemed like there were cool surprises showing themselves at every turn.

[post_page_title]Hot topic[/post_page_title]

In addition to the impressive density of the wheel, the coolness of how it looked, and its heaviness, the boys also noted another factor about the tire, now that it was off the wheel. “Woah, she’s warm,” one said.

It seems that the tire had gotten pretty hot after all that driving, and all of that wear and tear as well. When you consider that, it’s even more impressive that the duct tape was able to withstand all of that heat and retain its composure.

[post_page_title]Memento[/post_page_title]

“We need to keep this around,” said Orion. His friends agreed, one of them comparing it to a “trophy.” Looking at the tire the way it is now, you can totally see what they mean by that.

The duct tape tire is an absolute thing of beauty, especially once it’s off the wheel. It’s the type of object you can hang on your wall, to show to your friends when they come over. It’s like an ornament that you can put near your Christmas tree.

[post_page_title]The inner tube[/post_page_title]

But as awesome as the tire was, they didn’t succeed in getting the whole thing off the inner wheel. There was actually a whole inner section of the duct tape tire that was still attached to it, and they figured they might as well take it off.

“This is like the inner tube,” Orion said as he pulled off the remaining silver dregs of his beloved homemade tire. Indeed, Orion was the ringleader from the start, and that’s why he was confident when he gave the following final remarks.

[post_page_title]Orion’s advice[/post_page_title]

Seemingly done with the experiment, Orion gave his final conclusion to what he felt about the duct tape tire experiment. “So, to conclude this video. Can you make a tire out of duct tape?”

“Yes, you can. Do I recommend it? Absolutely not.” After everything they had been through, it seems that Orion wasn’t willing to give the duct tape tire his blessing for riding with it around town. His reputation was on the line, and he wanted to make sure people were staying safe.

[post_page_title]Quite the star[/post_page_title]

Because Orion isn’t just a random dude off the street. He’s actually a young rising star in the racing industry, and he’s actually got a solid amount of fans (510,000 YouTube subscribers, and 116 thousand Instagram followers, to be exact).

He knows that there are all kinds of people around the world watching his video, and therefore he didn’t want them to try making a duct tape tire for themselves, and possibly put themselves in danger.

[post_page_title]Don’t try this at home[/post_page_title]

There’s a reason that experts on television are always saying, “Don’t try this at home, kids.” It’s because they make certain things look easy and fun, whereas if someone else tried it, it might produce worse results.

Considering Orion is a professional race car driver, and seems to know a lot about cars, we can derive that he’s enough of an expert to do what he did. But although he was impressed with the results, he wanted to let us know that he’s not endorsing that we try it.
