Patterson Ross, senior official for a local tenant advocacy group, said that the ruling sent a message loud and clear to landlords and management agents everywhere. Repairs were one of the most common complaints his organization received, and some of the properties in the area were in a “really bad state.”
The problem was, Ross explained, there were no fines for leasing properties in a sorry state or for not carrying out repairs. “Tenants don’t raise issues for the fun of it,” he added, “we raise them because it’s our home and we have a right to be safe.”
