Years of urban legends and horror films have trained us to see hitchhiking as a huge no-no. 50 years ago, though, hitchhiking was seen as a perfectly benign practice, and numerous people trailed the side of the road looking to catch a ride.
The classic image is of a couple of hippies catching a ride down to the coast, but it was common amongst all kinds of people. Even schoolkids were hitching their way around just a few decades ago.
