This is, by far, the behavior that we find the hardest to comprehend from today’s vantage point. In the 60s, trucks would often go around neighborhoods pumping out the insecticide DDT, as a way of exterminating mosquitoes and preventing malaria.
While this seems somewhat reasonable, people would also, unbelievably, chase these trucks around, following behind in their foggy wake. It’s hard to believe that kids used to actively follow a pesticide truck around, but it was common practice by kids at the time.
