Maggie is a pivotal character and one of the survivors of the zombie apocalypse referred to as the walkers. Maggie is the eldest of her family and therefore is used to being a leader. It is no surprise that she becomes the leader of the Hilltop Colony as well as a co-leader of The Militia alongside Rick Grimes and Ezekiel.
Maggie is a resilient character who is both tough, brave but also kind. It takes her time to acclimate to this new world, originally believing that the walkers were merely sick.
