It turns out that most of the people that eventually made it into Woodstock were never supposed to be there in the first place. The organizers were selling tickets before the festival and managed to sell around 186,000 for $7 each before the weekend.
However, they never planned for the sheer number of people that arrived. The fences weren’t strong enough, meaning people eventually took them down and walked in. The organizers had no choice but to let people enter for free.
