Vanderbilt University was founded in 1873. Situated in Nashville, Tennessee, it was part of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Sure, Nashville might be known more for its country music than for its higher education, but Vanderbilt certainly bucks that trend.
In an interesting quirk, even though it was never listed as a coeducational institution, the university never actually prohibited women from enrolling either. Nowadays, the university has an acceptance rate of 12% and is highly respected in the field of education.
