The original version of the movie did not contain the Episode IV tagline. Lucas wasn’t aware the film would be a success and that there would be other films. After the success, the tagline was added. But why Episode IV? Well, this came about in 1978 when Lucas decided to change his initial direction and make the saga about Darth Vader, offering the chance of a prequel trilogy of backstory.
