Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s younger and only sibling, was a an absolute firebrand. She fell in love with Captain Peter Townsend, who worked at the royal stables and happened to be 16 years her senior – and married! Townsend divorced, and proposed to Margaret.
The young Princess wanted desperately to marry him, but was handed an ultimatum by the government – either give up her royal privileges, or give up the relationship. Margaret chose her royal duty, and eventually married someone else. When she divorced in 1978, she became the first royal to do so since Henry VIII in the 1500s.
