Although Diana strayed from the Royal Family’s stiff upper lip, she didn’t abandon the monarchy’s traditional values completely. She still abided by the rules and acted the part of a royal, much to her fans’ delight.
Even though Americans loved her for being more independent, they adored seeing her act like a proper princess. Given that the U.S. doesn’t have a monarchy steeped in traditions and pageantry, they appreciated the glimpse that Diana gave of how the other half lives. It was like watching a fairy tale unfold.
