After several years, Carson began to suspect Copeland of infidelity, and hired private investigators to determine whether or not she was having an affair.
When Carson and his lawyer, Henry Bushkin, found evidence of the affair in an apartment Copeland had been secretly keeping, Johnny was heartbroken. They would divorce in 1972, after a particularly acrimonious separation process.
