The more that Johnny got into entertainment – performing regularly at clubs and picnics around his home town of Corning, Iowa, the more pronounced the difference between his attitude on and off-stage became.
When performing, Carson was a beacon of light and energy, holding the crowd in the palm of his hand and thriving on their energy. When alone, or off-stage, Johnny became shy and withdrawn, unable to flourish in social situations. This distinction would only become more pronounced as Carson grew older.
