Despite having such a huge influence on television, Carson was deeply unhappy with the direction he saw it taking toward the end of his life. In his later years, Carson could be heard railing against the increasing prominence of reality TV, which he saw as shallow, gutter TV.
Unlike most show business figures, Carson was glad to have retired, relieved that he was no longer part of an industry putting out what he saw as intellectually bankrupt shows.
