Another incident that would seriously damage Carson’s relationship with someone came as the result of a bidding war for the Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Carson ended up bidding against singer Wayne Newton, with Newton eventually acquiring the casino.
Carson did not appreciate the media framing the bidding war as a loss for Carson, and began relentlessly ripping into Newton on his show. Newton was perplexed and upset at the ire Carson had directed at him, eventually threatening to assault Johnny unless he ceased immediately. He did.
