Although Carson was not financially impoverished, he certainly was in social situations. Johnny was deeply uncomfortable engaging with people in private, as he could not command control like he could on stage.
As such he was frequently withdrawn and quiet in interactions, constantly uncomfortable. In fact, Carson’s discomfort in social situations was so severe that he bought a house with only one bedroom, so that any guests he had would have to sleep in a guest house across the street instead.
