James Cameron sure loves his complicated water-themed movie projects. Titanic may be his most famous one, but The Abyss was no less ambitious, or messy. Just the sets cost $2 million to build, and the submersible oil rig took no less than 18 months to complete.
The cast and crew spent six long months working 70 hours per week to make The Abyss happen, and that started taking a toll on everyone. Both leads Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio came close to quitting more than once.
