Once the show got up and running, it was easy to get used to the fact that Mr. Cunningham was portrayed by the well familiarized Tom Bosley. However, most people have no idea that in the original pilot episode, Mr. Cunningham was actually played by Howard Gould.
The reason that he didn’t end up taking the role was due to his inability to make a long term commitment. Major mistake on his part, when you consider how successful the show ended up becoming.
