Many people reacting to the story were harshly criticizing the clerks working at the gas station, feeling they had been completely out of line by refusing to give poor Lex access to the phone. And as one commenter ironically pointed out, they did somehow manage to call 911 without having a phone.
But others said this is common for small businesses, who are worried about getting tricked and robbed. Since police stations are few and far in between int these types of remote areas, perhaps their caution is not so surprising.
