Thanks to her father’s harsh words and her brother’s constant taunts, Gabourey started to become a shell of her former self. She was hurt and confused at the fact that her own flesh and blood would say such things to her, but she tried not to let it show. She would brush off the taunts and pretend as though they hadn’t affected her in any way. In recent years, she has confessed that this experience gave her the opportunity to learn how to act. She acted as if everything was okay when inside she was breaking.
